The dogs of this type are large (15-21 inches tall, weighting up to 80 lbs) and box-shaped, with a square skull, broad and deep chest, and muscular shoulders and legs. The tail is usually docked, but, if not, is low and long. Their coat is smooth and short, all colors are permissible. Such dogs are powerful, courageous, protective and aloof with strangers, good at guard work, farm work, and field competition.
