There are many organizations and clubs dedicated to the improvement and promotion of the breed. Some of them were founded when the bull baiting was prohibited and the dogs became useless. Today, the vigor and strength of this breed serve other aims. Careful selection made these dogs affectionate and devoted family companions and protective guardians. In spite of their fierce look, they are very gentle with children and other animals. They require little grooming, but are difficult to breed, raise and train.

Having the Asiatic mastiff among ancestors, this breed makes excellent guardians and watchdogs, though it is very gentle with children and other pets. The general appearance of the breed makes a great impression on most people and more often the impression is fallacious. This dog breed has a compact, broad, and square body, wide massive head, stocky legs, and short tail, carried low. It is shorthaired and comes in a variety of colors, except black that is not acceptable. The skin on the head falls in dense folds. The eyes are round and dark; blue eyes are a fault.
